In a much anticipated move sure to please hybrid car owners, Wallingford has recently approved a tax exemption in the amount of $5,000 for hybrid and high mileage passenger vehicles. The ordinance will be effective starting with the October 1st Grand List and will end on July 1, 2010.
For the purposes of this exemption, a hybrid vehicle must have been purchased on or after 10/01/04 and before 10/01/08; it must have an EPA mileage rating of at least 40 mpg that draws accelleration energy from two onboard sources of stored energy which are both an internal combustion or heat engine which uses combustible fuel, and a rechargeable energy storage system that is certified to meet or exceed the Tier 2 Bin 5 low emission vehicle classification. A high mileage motor vehicle must have been purchased on or after 01/01/08 and before 07/01/10 and have an EPA mileage rating of 40 mpg or higher.
