Jazz Extravaganza Coming to Meriden

Great CT Traditional Jazz & Blues FestivalDuring this stretch of warm weather we’re having, what better way is there to do some serious chillaxin’ than by listening to some cool jazz and blues? Being a jazz fan of long standing, I would venture to say, NONE.

This coming Saturday, July 30th, the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Meriden is playing host to the 25th Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz & Blues Extravaganza from 3 PM to 11 PM on two separate stages. The event has been held over a three day period in the past, but due to financial constraints the organizers decided to shorten it to one day. This will not, however, have any effect on the most important aspect of the day: the music.

This year, the performances will be focused on two stages as opposed to the five stages of years past: an indoor stage where four great blues bands will hold sway from 5 PM to 11 PM, and an outdoor venue featuring some of the area’s best jazz ensembles from 3 PM to 9 PM. Here is a list of the scheduled performers:

Jazz Bands (Outside, 3 Pm – 9 PM):

Blues Bands (Inside, 5 PM – 11 PM):
Jazz GuitaristAll four of the blues bands and three of the four jazz bands all hail from Connecticut, with the Midiri Brothers from New Jersey the only exception. The Galvanized Jazz Band will be well known to veteran attendees of this festival, having performed here for 24 years, while Pete Scheips has opened for such well-known acts as Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Hall & Oates and B.B. King, and been featured on ESPN and MTV. Eran Troy Danner has also opened for B.B. King as well as Blues Traveler, and has played at both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos.

An all day 8 hour pass for the event can be obtained by calling 1-800-HOT-EVENT (1-800-468-3836) and is $30.00 if purchased in advance, $35.00 if purchased at the door. Time permitting, you can also send a check payable to “TGCTJF” to TGCTJF, PO Box 296, Cromwell, CT 06416-0296. Kids tickets are $6.00 for those between 7 and 17, while under 7 years of age is admitted free. For more info, see the Greater CT Jazz Festival web site.

Food, drinks and dancing will also be available. C’mon down and show us your “jazz hands”!
