A couple months ago we heard that Applebee’s, one of our favorite local restaurants, was closing. This was surprising, as whenever we went there the place was very busy, and no reason for the closing was given. It’s always sad to see a local business close, so we were glad to see that the space would not be empty long: a new Mexican-themed restaurant, Plaza Azteca, is slated to move in and will spend the next four to five months making renovations to the building.
Knowing that this chain is well regarded, we decided to do a little recon in anticipation of their arrival and visited the Newington location to see what we could expect. Turns out, we weren’t to be disappointed.
The Newington eatery is located in a building that once housed the Hops Restaurant, which itself closed in 2009 after a 10 year run as Connecticut’s only location. We had heard that this place does a brisk business, and that was confirmed when we arrived: all the dining room seats were full and we had to be seated in the bar. We were greeted by our server, Sara, quickly and placed our drink order as an order of complimentary chips and salsa appeared at the table.
The menu has no shortage of mouth-watering appetizers, entrees and desserts; with so much to choose from, deciding on just one thing was a difficult decision! After much deliberation, I settled on Burritos Fajita, two burritos filled with grilled onions and chicken or steak, topped with a delectable white cheese queso and served with pico de gallo, crema fresca, and rice (refried beans are also available). My wife chose the Puebla, one cheese and one beef enchilada and also served with your choice of rice or beans. Both entrees were delicious and filling, but not so much that we forgot about dessert: we ended the excellent meal with a Fried Ice Cream for my wife and a wickedly indulgent concoction called a Xango for myself. Very sweet, but highly recommended!
All in all, we were very pleased with the service, prices and food at Plaza Azteca and we’ll be glad when they finally open up in Wallingford. It’ll be just one more great local place to eat to choose from!
